Marine Signal Lantern - Inventory Number: MIS 173 / SOLD
Wonderful original 19th century lantern, constructed of Japanned tin with a fluted ventilator, clear magnifying bull's-eye, and hinged wire handles. The lantern could be flashed with red or green light via colored glass squares on opposite sides on the lantern’s interior. The lantern retains its original whale oil burner and wick. The lantern measures 5” by 2 ¼” and remains in excellent condition. A similar signal lamp was recovered from the ill-fated Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley.
