Conversion bayonet of the type produced between 1855-1861 as replacements bayonets for Model 1816 muskets. Many of these muskets were returned to arsenals to be converted from flintlock to percussion and were missing their original bayonets. The blade has the tapered shoulders distinctive to the 1855 pattern bayonet. The blade measures 18” and bears a deep “US” marking. In good condition with a bright blade and some darker, scattered pitting on the socket.
