The model 1840 musician sword was intended for musicians and were ceremonial in purpose, being worn by the musicians during drill and formations. The sword could be used in a fight, but only as a weapon of last resort. Manufactured by Ames Manufacturing Company, Chicopee Massachusetts. The blade is dated 1862 and is in excellent condition with a sharp point and a clear Ames scroll marking. The leather scabbard on this example is unique; the brass scabbard throat has two brass ring scabbard mounts rather than the typical scabbard frog. This may have been a custom order for a principal musician. A fine Civil War sword and a unique example.
