Model 1855 Springfield Rifle-Musket Dated 1860 Near Mint Condition - Inventory Number: RIF 238
This is a U.S. Model 1855 Springfield Rifle-Musket, manufactured in 1860 at the Springfield Armory. A .58 caliber, single-shot, muzzle-loading longarm, it was one of the most advanced infantry weapons of its time and the first U.S. military rifle to feature the Maynard tape primer system, visible beneath the hinged lockplate cover.
The rifle measures approximately 56 inches overall, with a 40-inch barrel fitted with three-barrel bands and iron mountings. It is equipped with a long-range leaf sight, sling swivels, and a clean walnut stock bearing crisp cartouche marks. The lockplate is clearly stamped with the Federal eagle motif, “U.S. SPRINGFIELD,” and the production year “1860.” The barrel is dated at the breech with matching marks and retains its original national armory bright finish.
Near mint examples like this are exceptionally rare, as most saw heavy service during the Civil War. This rifle-musket stands as a very good condition artifact of pre-war U.S. military innovation and craftsmanship.
