Nathan Starr 1818 Contract Cavalry Saber, Gettysburg Estate - Inventory Number: SWO 245 / SOLD
Contract of 1818 saber made by the firm of Nathan Starr of Middletown, Connecticut. Some 10,600 sabers were contracted to Nathan Starr by the US Ordnance Department in December 1818 for use by the militia cavalry in the various states. Delivered between 1820 and 1822, this Federal-era Starr saber has a 32” long clipped-point steel blade which has darkened with moderate, scattered pitting and numerous nicks along the edge. The ricasso is stamped “US / P / LS / N. STARR”. The iron hilt is tight to the tang. The ribbed wood grip has a couple of chips and cracks and is missing the leather wrap leather wrap. The iron scabbard is heavily pitted with an almost black patina, complete with two suspension rings mounted to the top edge. Drag has the narrow slipper still tightly on the tip. A nice addition to U.S. military edged weapons collection. The sword was recovered from an attic on Baltimore St. in Gettysburg and was found during renovations.
