A modern copy of an image which Alonzo is with his comrades, an original personalized booklet from the patriotic order of Sons of America as well as several of their ribbons mounted in a Riker display case.
Alonzo Hedden was a 19 year old farm boy when he enlisted at Flanders in Co. F of the 15" N.J. Vol. Inf. in August of 1862. He was promoted to Corporal several months later and advanced from 6th Corp. to 1" Corp. while serving with the regiment throughout the war. He had been absent only two months while recuperating from a bad gunshot wound to the right hand received on & May 1864 at Laurel Hill, Spotsylvania, Virginia.
After the war he worked as foreman of carpentry repairs in the railroad car shops at Dover NJ. In 1867 he married Margaret Stelce and they had two children. He suffered the stiffness of rheumatism in older life and died in 1915. Hedden was active in G.A.R. McDavit Post # 54 of which he was an officer. Being thus involved he accumulated a large number of reunion badges, post badges, pictures, and other items. Some are displayed in this case. Once in the collection of descendant Fred Christopher of New York City and other female relatives they are in 2002, within the collections of William Decker and John W. Kuhl of northern New Jersey.
