Pattern 1861 Cartridge Box with Indian War Interior Block - Inventory Number:  LEA 280 / SOLD

Early War pattern 1861 cartridge box for the .58 caliber Minie ball. The outer flap is in very good condition with supple leather and all its original finish, and still retains the original US box plate with a rich uncleaned patina. The exterior closure flap, rear belt loops, and roller buckles are all present and complete. The maker mark of Wilkinson & Cummins of Springfield, Massachusetts is present on the interior flap, which retains both ears. The original cartridge tins have been replaced with a 20 round drilled wooden block for metallic cartridges during the Indian War period. The implement pouch closure flap is detached but still present. A nice representative cartridge box for a Civil War or Indian War display.
