Pocket Knife with Bleeder - Inventory Number: MED 192 / SOLD

Unusual folding pocketknife with a secondary blade designed for medical bleeding. As a medical therapy, bleeding or bloodletting endured for approximately 2,500 years. It was based on an ancient system of medicine in which blood and other bodily fluids were regarded as "humours" that had to remain in proper balance to maintain health.  It was only abandoned at the end of the 19th century.  The blades extend from a 4 ½” handle with tortoiseshell grips. This example likely dates from the early 19th century, and both blades are still sharp. A nice addition to a knife or medical collection.
