Entitled: The Sacrifice Consumed the Life of Edward Hamilton Brewer lately a soldier in the Army of The Potomac – 1863
This scarce imprint is presented on the fly page with a beautiful calligraphy inscription in blue ink: “To my Soldier Friend. / From your / Sympathetic Chaplain / W. C. Whitcomb. N.C., 1864”
The soldier Edwards H. Brewer was a private in the 14th Connecticut Infantry who died in the service on March 2nd of 1863.
The Reverend William Chalmers Whitcomb received a commission on July 5th of 1862, as Chaplain of the U.S. Hospital at New Bern, N.C. and served there and other hospitals in that area. He got malarial fever, then acute bronchitis, and died at Morehead City, N.C. at the age of 44.
