President Andrew Johnson - Inventory Number: DOC 251
Signed two days after taking office for the Assassinated President Lincoln.
Andrew Johnson signed Military Appointment Washington D.C. April 17, 1865. This Document awards the rank of Brevet Major to Peleg E. Beckham of Company B 7th Rhode Island Infantry for Gallant and Meritorious services in the Battle pf Spotsylvania Court House and the Operations before Petersburg, Virginia.
The brevet was conferred posthumously, as Beckham was killed in action just two weeks prior on April 2, 1865 when Union Troops finally broke through the Confederate lines to pursue Lee's army to Appomattox.
Signed by the 17th President of the United States Andrew Johnson and Countersigned by Secretary of State Edwin M. Stanton. This document was signed just 2 days after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln and becomes one of the very first ever signed by the new President.
Rarer still is the fact that almost all documents by Andrew Johnson were steel engraved facsimile signature. Necessary after an injury to his right arm in 1857.
Nice display, frame measures 29 inches x 35 inches.
