Rare Colt Pocket Model with Ivory Grip! - Inventory Number: HAN 343

This Colt Model 1849 Pocket Model revolver was manufactured in 1859. The revolver has the rarely encountered marking "Saml Colt" hand engraved in Old English letters on the top of the barrel and "COLT'S/PATENT" hand engraved in large block letters on the left side of the frame. Colt expert R. L. Wilson notes in "THE BOOK OF COLT FIREARMS" that although the hand engraved "Saml Colt" and "COLT'S/PATENT" markings were standard on factory engraved Model 1849 Pocket revolvers between 1852-1860, the hand engraved markings are also occasionally found on non-engraved revolvers. In addition to the rare hand-engraved markings the revolver features a silver-plated barrel, loading lever, frame and trigger guard. The back strap is silver plated. The cylinder and hammer as well. Fitted with a smooth one-piece factory ivory grip. The five-shot cylinder is very lightly roll engraved with the Stagecoach Hold-up scene.  The frame bears the classic "COLTS PATENT" beneath the cylinder. The full serial number "153,742" is stamped on the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard, back strap and cylinder. The partial serial number "3,742" is stamped on the loading lever and cylinder arbor pin. "89,966" is stamped on the bottom of the wedge. All of the visible serial numbers match.  This gun is nearly identical to another example several hundred serial numbers from this example, the significance of this scarce batch is unknown.

Condition - Very good, the revolver retains nearly all of the original silver plated finish on the barrel, loading lever, frame, trigger guard and back strap. Finish wear on the trigger guard is limited to where the hand would have worn the finish from use, adding to the character of the piece. The attractive ivory grip is in excellent condition with the expected color and grain.  The underside of the butt strap is hand incised with a fancy arrow and the initials “C.S.P.”  The action is tight and functions well. This is an extraordinary example of a rare Model 1849 Pocket revolver with hand engraved barrel and frame markings and ivory grip!
