Scarce George McClellan Battle Memorial Medal – Inventory Number: MIS 285 / SOLD

George McClellan Battle Memorial Medal. DeWitt-GMcC 1864-87. White metal. 49.0 mm. Uncirculated.

This is a fascinating piece very infrequently encountered depicting the Army of the Potomac's revered General George McClellan on the obverse with a list of Phila battles he commanded on the reverse.

General George B. McClellan symbolized an alternative vision of the north’s efforts in the Civil War. The dashing young general was deeply popular to those who saw the war as a partisan battle, by Lincoln’s Republican party, to end slavery, crush the south, and remake American society. A coalition of soldiers, opponents of emancipation, Irish-Catholic immigrants, and others who opposed the prosecution of the war supported McClellans 1864 presidential bid, but it as not enough to overcome Lincolns strong support by 55% of voters.

Comes housed in 6 x 8 riker display case with black velvet and descriptive card.
