Signal Cannon – Inventory Number: ART 454 / SOLD
Handmade Civil War signal cannon, constructed of a section of wooden beam which has been channeled and mounted with barrel. Measures 18 inches in overall length, barrel 13 1/4 inch, and block 12 inches x 3 1/2inches, Original type provenance is affixed to the wooden carriage, states:
"Signal Cannon
Salvaged shortly after the War from the wreak of the blockade runner Flora located near Charlestown.
Donated to the museum by C.F. Reed, U.S.N., retired."
Signal cannons, also referred to as salute cannons, were used aboard ship and on land to make salutes, to warn of danger and to attract attention in the case of an emergency. They were also used to start yacht races. This example seeing service in the American Civil War on the SS Flora.
These cannons were generally cast in the style of the period to which they belong.
This handsome vented example constructed of wartime manufacture and would enhance any collection or display.
