Excavated South Carolina coat button. Two-piece construction depicting the South Carolina coat of arms against a lined background, flanked by the initials “SC”. The face has a fair amount of gilt remaining and good detail and remnants of green patina. The back retains the shank and the faint backmark “HORSTMANN & ALLIEN/NY.” Listed as SC258A1 in Uniform Buttons of the United States 1776-1865 by Warren K. Tice. The button is mounted in a 6” square wooden frame with red felt background.
