Starr Model 1858 Double Action Army Revolver Very Good Condition - Inventory Number: HAN 357 / SOLD
A strong example of the Starr Model 1858 Double Action Army Revolver, one of the three primary revolvers issued to Union forces during the Civil War. Manufactured by Starr Arms Company of Yonkers, New York, this innovative sidearm was notable for its double-action mechanism—a rare feature among U.S. martial revolvers of the era.
Chambered in .44 caliber percussion, this revolver features a six-shot cylinder, 6-inch round barrel, and solid frame construction. The metal surfaces exhibit a strong degree of the original blue finish. All markings are sharp, including the clear “STARR ARMS Co. NEW YORK” address and patent information.
The walnut grips are in very good condition and remarkably well-preserved, displaying three crisp and deeply struck U.S. inspector’s cartouches, confirming military acceptance and issue. The grips fit tightly with no cracks or repairs.
Mechanically, the revolver functions well, with a solid double-action mechanism and good timing—an uncommon feature for surviving examples, as many saw hard use in the field.
With approximately 23,000 produced, the Starr Double Action was issued in significant numbers early in the war but was eventually phased out in favor of simpler, single-action models. Surviving examples with multiple clear cartouches and in very good condition are increasingly scarce and highly desirable among Civil War arms collectors.
