The Bath - Inventory Number: CDV 373 / SOLD
Image of a young women in front of a waterfall titled The Bath. These CDV's were sold by sutlers to Civil War soldiers. A sutler usually built stores close to army encampments and sold provisions and supplies. To avoid any problems with the Christian Commission or the Sanitary Commission, they would claim they were "art" and nothing pornographic.
Printing at the bottom of CDV reads: Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1864, by John P. Soule, in the Clerk's Office of the District Court for the District of Massachusetts.
Ink inscription on reverse: "Album Gem Co / P.0. Box 17210" With Boston stamped in blue ink.
