Union Schenkl Artillery Shell Recovered from Gettysburg Battlefield - Inventory Number: ART 455
This was the most common Schenkl pattern purchased by the Federals. Approx. 9-inches long. It employed a papier-mache sabot (which is not present). The original brass percussion fuse is clearly stamped "J.P. SCHENKL PAT. OCT. 16, 1861.” The fuse screw threads are in excellent condition ad unscrews from the shell easily. This example was once part of the Jack Bell collection and was recovered in Gettysburg.
