    U.S. Artillery Plate - Inventory Number: BEL 250 / SOLD

    This tongue and wreath buckle was authorized by regulation in 1839 and was used to fasten the artilleryman belt, from which the short artillery sword could be hung when not in use, most were produced in the 1840's until the mid-1850's. The artilleryman used the short sword for signaling, defense, and clearing brush. Buckle is cast, bears "US" on stippled background.  A wonderful non-excavated example, both halves original with an excellent fit.
