Axe sheath was made of black bridle leather, shaped to fit the head of the axe, with strap to secure the axe and a loop on the rear to slide on the waist belt and stamped by the producing Navy Yard." The item offered is deeply embossed within an oval with the following identification: "NAVY YARD / * PHIL'A * / 1863." and is fabricated from 1/8” thick black bridle leather complete with the original closing strap and brass stud. Measuring approximately 7 ¼ " wide by 6 ¼" high, the leather is in excellent condition showing only some random flexing and surface blemishes and virtually no flaking. The stitching is also tight and the brass stud is firmly attached to the body. If you collect Civil War accoutrements, especially Navy issue, this is a choice example to add to that collection.
