Wonderful, cased U.S. Government purchased field surgery set manufactured by Van Wyck Brinkerhoff of New York between 1860-1862. The 16” by 5 ½” hardwood case is reenforced with brass inlays at the corners and bears an inlaid brass label engraved “U.S.A. Hosptl Dpt.” The three-tiered case is lined in red velvet and contains the instruments necessary for most battlefield surgeries, including trephine, capital saw, bone snips, tourniquet, surgical knives, tenaculum, and various other instruments. At the bottom of the main compartment is the 1860-1862 label of V. W. Brinkerhoff with the 88 William Street address. A classic Hospital Department issued Civil War field surgery set.
