Virginia Cockade - Inventory Number: CON 346 / SOLD
Original Civil War period patriotic cockade from the state of Virginia. Measuring 4" × 2 ½" mounted on red, white, and blue cotton star with red and white hanger ribbons. Button depicts the state seal of Virginia depicting the Sic semper tyrannis, "Thus always to tyrants". Libertas, holding a wand and pileus in her right hand; on her right, Aeternitas, with a globe and phoenix in her right hand; on the left of Libertas, Ceres, with a cornucopia in her left hand, and an ear of wheat in her right. This originated from an old collection in Richmond, Virginia and is accompanied by a period document dated Feb. 9th 1862 from the same estate between John Hopkins and T. E. Fahy regarding wagons and pails. No research yet.
