1850’s Militia Officer’s Sword Horstmann & Sons, Philadelphia - Inventory Number: SWO 315
A handsome and classic example of a militia officer’s sword, manufactured by the well-known outfitter Horstmann & Sons of Philadelphia, a premier supplier of edged weapons and military goods to state and volunteer officers in the antebellum and Civil War eras.
This pattern sword features a slightly curved, single-edged blade with a central fuller, with profuse etching. The blade retains a smooth, lightly aged patina and is clearly marked at the ricasso with the Horstmann & Sons retailer’s marking ad does the scabbard.
The sword’s most distinctive feature is its ivory-toned bone grip, ribbed for secure hold, set between a gilt brass hilt with a decorative floral-patterned guard and a prominent urn-style pommel. The hilt shows a warm, untouched patina with elegant detail and no repairs or damage.
Housed in its original brass scabbard, the sword is complete with all mounts intact, including the throat, suspension bands, and drag. The scabbard exhibits a smooth, mellow patina with minor handling marks but no significant dents or distortions.
Typically carried by officers in state militias or volunteer units during the 1850s and early 1860s, this sword reflects the refined taste and ceremonial style of the period. It stands as a fine representative of early American officer accoutrements prior to the standardization brought by the Civil War.
