Striking Civil War veterans’ reunion medal commemorating the 1900 gathering in Chicago of the 72nd Illinois Volunteer Infantry, also known as the “Board of Trade Regiment.” This bronze medal is suspended from a red, white, and blue silk ribbon with a bar pin top engraved “Chicago Reunion 1900.”
The obverse is inscribed:
“Board of Trade Regiment / Mustered in Aug. 21, 1862 / Mustered out Aug. 7, 1865 / 72nd Ill. Vol. Inf. / In honor of those who fought / In memory of those who fell.”
The reverse bears the message:
“A Remembrance from your old commander / Gen’l Jas. Stockton.”
A touching and beautifully preserved piece of postwar camaraderie and remembrance, honoring the sacrifice and service of Illinois soldiers who fought in some of the toughest campaigns of the war.
