Albumen Photograph of 165th New York Battle Flags “2nd Battalion Duryee’s Zouaves” - Inventory Number: ALB 275
Rare Albumen photograph of the tattered battle flags of the 165th New York Infantry. The 165th was regarded as a sister regiment to the 5th New York Volunteer Infantry (Duryee’s Zouaves). The regiment wore the same uniform as the 5th New York with the exception of the tassel of the fez, which was dark blue instead of yellow gold. The 165th served primarily in the Department of the Gulf in the 19th Corps and suffered heavy losses in the Siege of Port Hudson. It later saw service in the Army of the Shenandoah. The photograph measures 13 ½” by 11” and is marked via calligraphy ink inscription: “Photo by Gurney N.Y.” along the bottom edge. There are several areas of loss along the edge of the mat, but overall the image is in very good condition with great details. A rare and impressive albumen photograph for a Civil War image or zouave collector. Housed in a wonderful period appropriate archival frame measuring 17 ¾ x 20 ½”.
