Carte de visite (CDV) of Brigadier General Benjamin Prentiss, boldly seated in full uniform with rank shoulder straps clearly visible. The front of the image features a period pencil ID: “Gen. Ben Prentiss”, with additional pencil notation on the reverse identifying him as “Gen. B. Prentiss.”

General Prentiss is best remembered for his leadership at the Battle of Shiloh, where he commanded the Union’s defense of the infamous “Hornet’s Nest.” Though eventually surrounded and captured, his determined resistance helped delay Confederate advances and allowed Union reinforcements to arrive. He was later exchanged and continued to serve with distinction in the Western Theater.

This is a superb wartime portrait of a lesser-known but pivotal Union general. Crisp image detail and strong identification make this CDV a must-have for collectors of Union generals or Shiloh-related material.
