    Civil War-Era Embossed Patriotic Valentine – 1863 - Inventory Number: DOC 392

This rare and sentimental piece is a Civil War-era patriotic valentine, dating to February 1863, as inscribed on the reverse. The front features an embossed and delicately scalloped paper card with a hand-colored lithograph of a soldier embracing a lady, framed within a green floral wreath. Below the image is a touching printed poem titled “Thoughts of Home,” expressing the deep longing and emotional ties between soldiers and their loved ones during wartime.

The back of the card is inscribed in period ink to “Miss Kate L. Becket” and signed by James Vondell, dated Feb. 1863, New York, 37th N.Y. This regiment, known as the “Irish Rifles,” was active in several major battles, adding historical depth to the item.

Both sides of the card display elegant embossed floral patterns typical of mid-19th-century valentine designs. Slight staining on the back lower edge and minor wear are present, consistent with its age, but overall this piece remains in remarkably good condition.

A poignant and highly collectible example of Civil War-era romantic correspondence, merging patriotic sentiment, period artwork, and regimental history. Ideal for collectors of Civil War memorabilia, antique valentines, or 19th-century ephemera.

Comes housed in 12 x 16 riker display case with blue velvet and descriptive card.
