Civil War-Era “Payson’s Indelible Ink” with Original Brush – Dated 1858 - Inventory Number: MIS 310 / SOLD

An exceptional surviving example of Payson’s Indelible Ink, patented and widely used in the mid-19th century for permanently marking textiles, military gear, and personal belongings. This cylindrical container retains its full original printed label, including directions dated November 1858.

Accompanying the container is the original application brush, featuring a turned wooden handle and bristle head set in a metal collar — exactly the type used by soldiers and sutlers to mark uniforms, haversacks, or hospital linens with permanent identification.

These ink kits were essential for marking military and civilian garments alike, and were popular among Union troops during the Civil War due to their reliable, waterproof staining ability.

A perfect addition to any Civil War writing kit, medical display, or sutler’s impression.

Comes housed in 6 x 8 riker display case with blue velvet and descriptive card.
