Civil War Officer’s Kepi - Inventory Number: UNI 188 / SOLD
This is a very good condition, classic Civil War officer’s kepi, defined by the inset crown, of medium height, somewhat taller than a chasseur style. It is a particularly good quality cap, privately purchase as all officer’s gear was since they had to purchase their own. The visor is flat, painted leather. The interior is lined in brown polished cotton with a mustard-colored decorative stitch for an extra quality touch. The side buttons are infantry “I’ buttons with excellent gilt. The tarred leather chin strap is excellent with matching gilt on the buckle.
The overall color of the body is very strong, with just some scattered pinhole moth nips. The interior is very good as well. The sweatband is in missing exposing the base of the lining showing where the sweat stains stopped, a nice indicator the cap saw some use. The front is adorned with a large infantry insignia often seen on Hardee hats. The velvet field and gold bullion horn are excellent with a slight patina to the metal. The center field of the horn retains an original regimental numeral “1” with matching patina. It is affixed with 2-ply “S” twist thread indicating it was a period mounted piece.
