Original Civil War officer’s maroon silk sash in good condition. Worn by Federal officers in most of the branches of the United States Army, the waist sash was a common uniform accoutrement that signified a symbol of authority in the military during both field operations and camp duty. The sash, when worn over the frock coat, was wrapped twice around the waist and looped on the left side. The officer’s leather sword belt was worn over this sash. This specimen exhibits a maroon color and measures 4” wide by 113” in total length. The sash has areas of light fading and wear. Original Civil War silk sashes are becoming difficult to find in the collecting field today. A fine example.
