Confederate Reed Shell Battlefield of Gettysburg - Inventory Number: ART 388 / SOLD
This excavated Confederate 3 inch Read shell is in very good condition and still retains its excellent condition fuse adaptor. The copper sabot shows excellent rifling impressions from a 3-inch Ordnance Rifle. The base shows segments of the body chipped away during the expansion of the sabot, resulting in its present form. About ½” below the bottom of the fuse adaptor, on one side of this shell, are the remnants of its lathe chock. This fine Confederate shell has been disarmed, has no repairs, and is ready for display. It will be an nice addition to any excavated Civil War artillery or Gettysburg relic collection. Approximate weight is 6.4 lbs and the length is 7 inches. This shell was recovered from the field of Gettysburg and was retained in a local collection since the war! Accompanied by a letter of provenance.
