    Conscription Law Booklet – 1863 - Inventory Number: HIS 239

    The conscription law, also known as the enrolment act of March 3rd 1863. Authorized the conscription of "Able-Bodied" male citizens between the ages of 20 and 45. Since no distinction was made as to race, the law implied that blacks could be drafted into military service as well. It became the single greatest single force in furthering the cause of the black soldier.

    Booklet titled "The United States Conscription Law of 1863" published by Fortune, New York. 32pp with blue paper wraps. Booklet details all new laws pertaining to conscripts.
