Excavated US Cartridge Box Plate Marked “Boyd and Sons Boston” - Inventory Number: BEL 427 / SOLD
Cartridge box plates were displayed on the outer flap of the soldier's cartridge box. Not only ornamental but more practically used as a weight to keep the cartridge box flap closed to prevent cartridge loss. See the additional images in this listing for an image showing its use. Construction: Stamped thin sheet brass with solder fill and iron attachment loops.
Good, excavated condition. Its brass front, with raised letters "US", has a mostly brown. Stamped into the rear is the manufacturer's mark of "BOYD & SONS / BOSTON". Both attachment loops are present and the plate has no cracks or repairs. Recovered: Culpeper County, VA. This cartridge box plate will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War plate or general relic collection.
Comes housed in a 6 x 8 inch display case with dark blue velvet backing and descriptive card.
