    Manual of Bayonet Exercise ID’d to Herman C. Hemenway, 27th Indiana Infantry - Inventory Number: HIS 104 / SOLD

    Manual of Bayonet Exercise: Prepared for the Use of the Army of the United States by George B. McClellan. McClellan originally published this work in 1852, based on a French fencing manual. This copy was published in Philadelphia by J.B. Lippincott & Co. The manual is 118 pages with 24 illustrative plates and is hardbound in green cloth with embossed eagles on front and back. The front page is inscribed in pencil “Lt. H.C. Hemenway, Cairo Ills Nov 20/62, 27th Reg. Iowa Vols.” Herman C. Hemenway enlisted at 28 years old in August 1862 as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 27th Iowa. They served throughout Tennessee and the deep south and suffered significant casualties in the Battle of Pleasant Hill, Louisiana.
