Model 1858 McClellan Farrier’s Saddle Bags - Inventory Number: LEA 420
Leather on bags is supple with light to moderate crazing. Both latch tabs are present. Inner leather lacing is present on larger bag. Smaller bag has inner pocket. Cross straps that connect bags are in good condition. “J.H.W. and U.S.” are marked on one strap. The interior of bags is in good condition. This item would be a great addition to a cavalry collection.
Saddlebags had a wide variety of uses by cavalry troopers during the Civil War. Among them, it is speculated that their original purpose was to carry extra, pre-fitted horseshoes.
These Farrier saddle bags that would look great in a cavalry display and would pair nicely with the 1858 McClellan saddle.
