Signature of Confederate General Joseph "Fightin Joe” Wheeler - Inventory Number: AUT 118
Joseph "Fightin Joe” Wheeler was born in Georgia and graduated from West Point in 1859. He was appointed First Lieutenant, Corps of Artillery, C. S. A, on April 3, 1861, by September he was Colonel of the Alabama 19" Regiment, just oner a Year later on October 28th, 186 he was promoted to Brigadier General, the following, January he was made Major General and on February 28, 1865, he was promoted to Lieutenant General. He was wounded three times in battle and had about the same number of horses shot from under him. He was one of the most famous leaders of the Confederate Cavalry with Bedford Forrest, After the war he became a planter near Courtland, Alabama and in 1880 was elected to the United States House of Representatives. He died on January 25, 1906, and is one of the few Confederate Soldiers buried within Arlington National Cemetery.
