1816 Model Percussion Conversion Smoothbore Musket by Pomeroy 

 

This attractive U.S. Model 1816 Percussion Conversion Musket, manufactured by S. Pomeroy, represents one of the many flintlock muskets altered to percussion ignition for continued military service during the antebellum period. Chambered in .69 caliber smoothbore, this example was converted using the desirable cone-in-barrel alteration method and remains a fine, untouched representative of these important transitional military arms.    

 

The steel components exhibit a pleasing dark gray patina with scattered darker brown highlights. Light peppering and minor pitting are present throughout, while the breech area displays evidence of percussion cap erosion consistent with military use. The left side of the barrel near the breech is stamped with a “P” proof mark enclosed within an oval, along with an additional “M” inspection stamp.    

 

The lock plate is marked with a federal eagle over S. Pomeroy, with 1828 U.S. stamped behind the hammer. The barrel tang is likewise dated 1828. All three barrel bands are matching and stamped with the assembly number 37 on the right side.    

 

This musket retains both original sling swivels and its original button-tipped ramrod. The lock remains mechanically sound and functions properly, holding securely in all positions. The stock remains in very good condition with a clearly visible oval inspector’s cartouche and retains strong overall integrity. A small wood repair is present on the right side behind the side plate, noted for accuracy.    

 

Additional features include visible U.S. markings on the top of the buttplate and attractive, untouched surfaces throughout. The musket displays the honest wear expected of a military arm that served through the percussion conversion era while retaining its original components and strong eye appeal.    

 

A fine example of a U.S. Model 1816 percussion conversion musket by one of the principal government contractors, offering desirable markings, matching components, and excellent historical character.
