An outstanding original 1860 Republican campaign ballot issued in Wayne County, Michigan, supporting the presidential ticket of Abraham Lincoln and Hannibal Hamlin. Beautifully engraved with a patriotic military trophy featuring crossed American flags, cannon, and a central wreath bearing the names of the Republican candidates beneath the bold slogan “For the Union.” The ballot further proclaims “No Compromise With Treason!” and includes the stirring line, “Rally ’round the Flag, boys, rally once again,” sentiments that would become synonymous with Union loyalty during the Civil War.

 

Political tickets such as this were distributed directly to voters prior to the adoption of the secret ballot and were intended for single-day use, making surviving examples scarce. Produced during one of the most consequential elections in American history, this ballot represents the campaign that carried Lincoln to the presidency and preceded the secession crisis and outbreak of the Civil War.
