Obverse:
High-relief jugate busts of George, Gordon Meade(Union) and Robert E. Lee (Confederate) facing one another, symbolizing reconciliation between North and South. Beneath the portraits are the dates 1863 – 1938. Around the border appears the legend “GETTYSBURG – BLUE AND GRAY REUNION.”
Reverse:
Depicts the High Water Mark Monument at Gettysburg, commemorating Pickett’s Charge. Above is the inscription “75th ANNIVERSARY” and “OF THE BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG.” The lower portion is decorated with crossed laurel and oak branches with “GETTYSBURG” at the base.
Issued for the last major reunion of Civil War veterans, held July 1938, marking the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. This event is especially significant as it was the final time large numbers of Union and Confederate veterans gathered together; most were in their late 80s and 90s. President Franklin D. Roosevelt addressed the reunion, emphasizing national unity and reconciliation.
