Description

Breast Plate Excavated in Frederick County, Virginia

A field-excavated breast plate, recovered in Frederick County, Virginia, an area of repeated Civil War troop movement and engagement. The plate exhibits heavy corrosion and notable deformation consistent with long-term burial.

The reverse shows pronounced impact distortion. While at first glance this damage could suggest battlefield trauma, it is important to note that many excavated plates exhibiting similar deformation are known to be plow-struck, a common occurrence for relics recovered from agricultural ground.

The plate retains clear pattern details, including the spread-wing eagle clutching arrows, still visible beneath stable verdigris and earthen patina. The surface remains untouched, with no attempts at cleaning or restoration—preserving the artifact’s authenticity and archaeological integrity.

Comes housed in 6 x 8 riker display case with red velvet and descriptive card.
