Description

Cased Civil War Soldier Figural Meerschaum Pipe, c. 1861–1865

Outstanding Civil War-era figural meerschaum pipe depicting a bearded soldier wearing a kepi, complete with its original fitted case and amber stem. The carving displays excellent detail, from the deeply incised beard and facial features to the distinctive military cap associated with Union and Confederate soldiers of the American Civil War. The bowl has acquired a beautiful golden honey coloration from years of careful use, creating the rich patina highly prized by collectors of antique meerschaum pipes.

The pipe remains housed in its original shaped case with velvet interior, an increasingly scarce feature that greatly enhances both display value and collectibility. Soldier-themed figural meerschaums were especially popular during the mid-19th century and served as patriotic smoking accessories during and immediately following the war. The combination of strong military subject matter, attractive smoking color, original amber stem, and fitted case make this a particularly desirable example of Civil War-era folk and smoking material culture.
