Description
Civil War 1/4 Plate Tintype – Four Union Officers
A striking 1/4 plate tintype featuring four Union officers, all wearing regulation frock coats with clearly defined shoulder straps indicating their commissioned ranks. The larger 1/4 plate format provides excellent clarity and presence, allowing fine detail in their faces, uniforms, and studio backdrop to show beautifully.
Two officers are seated in the front, while two stand behind them, forming a strong and dignified group composition. Their coats, shoulder straps, and brass buttons are sharply rendered. The tintype retains very good contrast, and while period surface crazing is present—as expected for a 160-year-old image—it does not diminish the visibility or impact of the portrait.
The image is housed in its original ornate gilt brass mat with floral and scroll decoration, adding a classic Civil War-era presentation frame.
Group portraits of multiple commissioned officers are considerably scarcer than enlisted groupings, making this a standout example for collectors of Union officer material or early-war studio photography. A desirable and impressively sized Union officer group tintype—ideal for any advanced Civil War photograph collection.
Comes housed in 6 x 8 riker display case with red velvet and descriptive card.
