Description
Civil War Confederate South Carolina Coat Button
Original Civil War–era South Carolina state seal button, coat size, featuring the palmetto tree with crossed implements within a lined field. The reverse is clearly marked “HT&B / MANCHESTER”, the well-known British maker Hammond, Turner & Sons (Howard & Thomas), Manchester, a principal supplier of buttons to the Confederacy.
Gilt brass construction with strong remaining detail and attractive age toning. Imported English buttons of this type were widely used on Confederate uniforms due to Southern manufacturing shortages and are a classic, highly desirable Southern state insignia.
A textbook example of a Confederate South Carolina button with English backmark, suitable for display or advanced collection.
Comes housed in 4 x 3 riker display case with black velvet and descriptive card.
