Civil War–Era Carte-de-Visite Album Removal Card
Album card produced by William W. Harding, Philadelphia, issued for use with photographic albums during the Civil War period.
Printed on stiff yellow card stock, this piece was designed to serve as a sizing and removal aid for carte-de-visite photographs. Period instructions printed on the card advise users to ensure portraits were no larger than the card before insertion and note that thinner mounts prevented album clasps from loosening. Such cards were commonly used to lift or remove CDVs from album slots without damaging the photograph or binding.
The card features ornate period typography and graphics advertising Harding’s photograph albums and religious publications, with his Chestnut Street address clearly printed. These cards were often discarded once albums were filled, making surviving examples comparatively scarce.
