An original Civil War–period leather change purse fitted with a metal frame and clasp, retaining its soft, well-worn body from long use. as found with original currency with matching patina.
Accompanying the purse are seven U.S. two-cent pieces. Introduced in 1864, the two-cent coin was the first United States currency to bear the motto “In God We Trust” and was widely circulated during the war years to alleviate small-change shortages.
Small purses such as this were commonly carried by civilians and soldiers alike, used to hold coins, personal tokens, or small necessities. The survival of both the purse and its original-period contents offers a rare and intimate glimpse into daily life during the Civil War.
