Description
Civil War Knitted Wool Camp Hat
An exceptionally attractive Civil War period knitted camp or fatigue hat, constructed entirely of red worsted wool. The cap features a long, tapered crown terminating in a decorative knitted ball and tassel, with a broad, heavily patterned knitted band surrounding the base. The substantial worsted construction and intricate period knitting give the piece tremendous visual character.
Privately obtained camp hats such as this provided soldiers an alternative to regulation headgear when relaxing in camp or performing routine duties. Knitted examples were often produced at home or acquired privately, resulting in considerable variation in color, pattern, and construction. Unlike standardized government-issued caps, surviving examples have a distinctly personal character.
The brilliant red wool remains remarkably strong and vibrant, with the knitted pattern and decorative tassel well preserved. A particularly appealing piece of Civil War soldier camp clothing, representing the informal side of military life that is far less commonly encountered than regulation uniform pieces.
