Description

Civil War Leather Saddle Valise – Petersburg, Virginia – Inventory Number: LEA 454 A well-preserved Civil War-era leather saddle valise, recovered from the Petersburg, Virginia area. Crafted of heavy black bridle leather, this cylindrical case measures approximately 17 inches in length and 6 1/2 inches in diameter. Both original side handles remain intact, along with the leather closure strap and loops. The body exhibits the expected wear from field use, including a deeply patinated surface with period crazing and old stress marks. Notably, the underside retains clear impressions from the saddle it once rested against, as well as the partial remnant of a period paper label bearing the handwritten name “Morgan.” This evocative artifact offers a tangible connection to the cavalryman’s gear and transport during the siege of Petersburg. An outstanding example of field equipment used by mounted troops in the final campaigns of the war. *To purchase this item directly with a credit card, please click on this link.   Inventory Number: LEA 454
