Civil War Officer’s Epaulettes in Original Japanned Tin Case
New York – Flushing Light Infantry
A fine pair of Civil War–era officer’s bullion epaulettes housed in their original japanned tin carrying case. The epaulettes feature heavy gold bullion fringe with crescent-shaped gilt fabric fields bordered in gilt braid. Each shoulder crescent displays a hand-embroidered light blue cloth field with silver bullion trim, signifying infantry service. The gilt surfaces show light age toning with areas of verdigris, while the fringe remains full and intact. The tin case retains its original black japanned finish with hinged lid and small front hasp. Interior retains its red fabric lining under the epaulettes. Fitted specifically to protect and carry the insignia, such cases were essential for transporting officers’ dress uniform accoutrements.
These epaulettes are identified to the Flushing Light Infantry; a New York militia company organized prior to the war and incorporated into state service during the conflict. Units such as this one served in ceremonial roles before the war but contributed officers and men to the Union cause after 1861. The light blue insignia strongly reinforces infantry association, and the quality of construction.
Epaulettes show light wear and tarnish consistent with age and service, tin case with scattered surface abrasions and patina, but structurally sound. Dimensions: Epaulettes approx. 6” across; case approx. 8.5” x 5” x 4”. A handsome and highly displayable identified set, linking Civil War officer’s finery with a notable New York militia regiment.
