Description
Civil War Percussion Cap Box
U.S. Civil War percussion cap box, manufactured by R. White and bearing a sub-inspector stamp attributed to S. H. Young of Newark, New Jersey, a known Civil War–era leather inspector.
The box retains its original outer flap, boldly stamped “R. WHITE / U.S.” within an oval cartouche. Leather construction, stitching, and overall form are textbook for mid-war Federal infantry issue.
Importantly, this example is complete, retaining original wool lining, vent pick, quantity of original percussion caps still present. The reverse shows both belt loops intact, with period stitching and correct copper rivets.
Cap boxes complete with original contents are increasingly difficult to find, and the presence of the sub-inspector mark significantly enhances both authenticity and collector desirability. The association with S. H. Young of Newark, NJ further strengthens its appeal as a documented Federal contract accoutrement.
A strong, untouched Civil War infantry cap box, ideal for an advanced accoutrement collection, museum display, or pairing with a complete soldier’s rig.
