Civil War Soldier’s Pocket New Testament
Identified to Wm. Jacob V. Harney, Co. A, 12th New Jersey Infantry
Great Gettysburg Unit
Small wartime New Testament printed by the American Bible Society, New York, 1862, in the “Pearl 32mo” format. Bound in its original red pebble-grained morocco leather cover with fold-over flap and tuck clasp, showing light wear from field use. The title page bears the standard wartime imprint: “Translated out of the Original Greek; and with the Former Translations Diligently Compared and Revised.” Neatly inscribed in period brown ink on the inside flyleaf: “Wm. Jacob C. Carney / Co. A, 12th Regt N.J. Vols.” Carney served in Company A, 12th New Jersey Infantry, a hard-fighting regiment of the Army of the Potomac that saw extensive service at Chancellorsville, Gettysburg (notably in the fight for the Bliss Farm), The Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and during the Siege of Petersburg, culminating at Appomattox in April 1865. Bibles of this type were widely distributed to Union troops through the American Bible Society and were among a soldier’s most personal wartime possessions.
This example, personalized to a combat veteran of the 12th New Jersey, represents a poignant relic of faith carried through some of the fiercest campaigns of the Civil War. Condition: Excellent, with strong legible inscription and complete text block; moderate exterior wear consistent with period use.
