Description
Civil War U.S. Percussion Cap Box
A classic mid-war Federal percussion cap box, constructed of black harness leather with its original outer flap, latch tab, and body all intact. The leather displays excellent untouched surface with expected field wear, crazing, and a deep, pleasing patina. The inner flap remains present, and the implement pocket still retains its original vent pick, an increasingly scarce survival as these small tools were often lost during service.
As is typical of wartime use, the wool was removed as it would impede the access to the caps. The stitching throughout is tight and original, showing no post-war repairs. The belt loops on the reverse remain strong and fully functional and undisturbed. Maker marked “Baker N-Y McKinney”.
This is a solid, honest example of a Federal cap box—ideal for a cartridge box display, infantry grouping, or general field-carried accoutrement collection.
